St. Patrick’s Day Drinking? Don’t Become a Statistic!
St. Patrick’s Day has become one of the nation’s most popular holidays. Parades, parties, and green beer — what’s not to like? It’s time to put on your favorite green shirt, grab your friends, and head out to your favorite pub, but don’t forget planning ahead!
Sadly, St. Patrick’s Day has also become one of the deadliest holidays. Data shows that DUIs, alcohol violations, and alcohol-involved crashes spike on this day.
Because of this, state and local police are planning extra roving patrols and checkpoints on St. Patrick’s Day aimed at identifying impaired drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.


Before celebrating, please plan ahead to keep yourself and everyone else safe on the road:
If you plan to drive after a St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year, here are some important stats from the NHSTA to consider:

During the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, 74 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes holiday, of which 49 involved drivers with a blood alcohol level of almost twice the legal limit (.15+ BAC).
Nighttime driving was significantly more dangerous than daytime driving, with 38% of drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes between the hours of 6 pm and 5:59 am being drunk.
30% of the pedestrians killed in traffic crashes had a BAC at or above .08. Pedestrians who have been drinking should also arrange for a sober ride or for a sober friend to walk them home.
Drunk male drivers were involved in fatal crashes at a higher rate (29%) during the St. Patrick’s Day compared to female drivers (14%).
Drivers ages 21-34 (34%) were the age group most involved in alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities, followed by drivers under 21 (30%).
The rates of passenger car drivers and motorcyclists involved in these fatal drunk-driving crashes were 34% and 41%, respectively.
